The Boss Tops 2003 Concert Earnings List
NEW YORK - Bruce Springsteen (news) was the boss of the concert
business in 2003, raking in $115.9 million to rank second
only to the Rolling Stones for the most money ever earned
by a concert act in a year.
Springsteen and his E Street Band earned the money on 47 concerts,
concluding their tour with a staggering 13 stadium shows in
the New York area, the concert industry trade publication
Pollstar reported Tuesday.
The Stones' $121.2 million earned in 1994 still stands as
the record, Pollstar said. The Stones brought in $38.5 million
this year, to rank 14th.
Springsteen's reported earnings don't count the concert dates
he played outside of North America, or in 2002, when "The
Rising" tour began.
Pollstar hasn't finished its calculations yet, but Editor
Gary Bongiovanni predicted 2003 will be the fourth record-setting
year in a row with around $2.4 billion in concert business.
It's largely because fans have accepted higher ticket prices
for big-name acts, particularly veterans, he said.
"Back in 1994 when the Eagles charged $100 a ticket,
there was practically rebellion in the streets," Bongiovanni
said.
Four acts in Pollstar's top 10 earners for the year —
Celine Dion (news), the Eagles,
Simon & Garfunkel and the Billy Joel (news)-Elton John
(news) double bill — charged more than $100 per ticket,
on average.
Simon & Garfunkel's first reunion tour in more than a
decade averaged the most — $136.90 per seat.
The cheapest average ticket price in Pollstar's top 20 was
Kenny Chesney (news)'s $35.76.
It was a good year for country, which had five of Pollstar's
top 20 tours. The Dixie Chicks (news - web sites), despite
being dogged by controversy over a remark made about President
Bush (news - web sites), had the most lucrative country tour
of all time.
Celine Dion finished second to Springsteen,
earning $80.5 million for a one-city, 145-date "tour":
her residency at a Las Vegas casino.
"If you're wondering why Elton John is considering camping
there for a while — that's why," Bongiovanni said.
"You can make a lot of money and you don't have to travel."

Celine Dion Billboard Makes Nevada
Man's Dreams Come True
A
53-year-old Nevada man has had his songwriting dreams come
true after renting a billboard on a dusty stretch of road
outside of Las Vegas in hopes Celine Dion would see it and
contact him.
Water treatment chemical salesman John Henderson spent $1000
to post a sign on the road to Dion's Vegas-area home which
reads "Celine Dion: I've written a song for you. Please
call me for words and music."
The gimmick seemed like a shot in the dark, but it has paid
off for Henderson.
Last week, he got a call from Dion's husband saying she'd
seen the sign and
wanted to invite him to her show.
After the performance, Henderson was invited backstage, where
he played his ballad, "Love Song," for the singer.
He says Dion sang along with the song and agreed to consider
recording it for her next album.
In Henderson's words, "That's good enough for me."

Celine and René urge public to give generously
to Montreal hospital
Céline's
voice was choked with emotion yesterday as she urged the public
to donate to a local children's hospital where her niece died
a decade ago. But she was relatively composed at the event,
a stark contrast to the flow of tears she shed last year at
a similar appeal for donations to Ste-Justine Hospital. Céline
and husband/manager Rene Angelil, both part of the fundraising
campaign, once again urged people to give generously to the
hospital. "Who will benefit from all this (money)? Our
children, our teenagers, our mothers," said Céline,
"It's time for the parents, individuals, families, all
of us, to be generous - to open our hearts. The life of a
child obviously doesn't have a price."
Céline and René are patrons of a five-year
campaign to raise money for research, e quipment,
beds and an enlarged cancer facility at Ste-Justine. She said
$76 million has been collected so far and the foundation's
goal is $100 million in public donations. Several large corporations
have already donated major sums. René said the donations
will help to build and maintain pediatric-care expertise and
technology in Quebec. "When a child is sick, not everyone
has the luxury to go to Boston or Houston or another city
to be treated," he said. "if we can buy a Christmas
gift for someone, then we can also send a gift to our children."
Céline and René also announced the largest donation
ever made to the Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation... $5,000,000
donated by Marcelle and Jean Coutu Fondation.

Celine Dion acknowledges crowd who
turned out for her father's funeral
CHARLEMAGNE,
Que. (CP) - Singer Celine Dion (news - web sites) waved politely
and smiled slightly to fans and mourners Thursday after a
funeral service for her father, who has been described as
her No. 1 fan.Dion stood on the steps of the Roman Catholic
church after the private service and also watched her father's
casket be placed into a waiting hearse. Adhemar Dion, 80,
died last weekend after a lengthy illness.
Fans, who had waited outside in chilly temperatures, shouted
Courage to the 35-year-old pop star and held up bouquets of
flowers.
Earlier, a sad-looking Dion escorted her mother, Therese,
into the church. The singer was carrying a bouquet of flowers
and also seemed tired, but acknowledged the crowd of several
hundred townsfolk with a slight nod and wave.
Her husband and manager, Rene Angelil, followed Dion and her
mother into the St-Simon and Jude church. Other family members
then made their way into the church, about 40 kilometres northeast
of Montreal.
Townsfolk watched as 20 limousines, 15 cars carrying flowers
and five busloads of family and friends arrived for the invitation-only
service.
About 350 people were expected to attend the service, including
200 members of the Dion family.
"There will be no room for the public inside the church,"
said local police officer Paul Diamond before the service.
Security guards and provincial police also were on hand with
local officers to block off streets in Dion's hometown. The
Dion patriarch is credited for passing on his dreams of musical
success to all of his children.
From the age of five, Celine was brought to the club to sing
along with her siblings. Her father worked at a slew of different
jobs - from forestry worker to general labourer - as he struggled
to support his young family before buying an inn in Charlemagne.
Celine Dion personally greeted hundreds of people Wednesday
who came to a funeral home in Laval, Que., to pay their last
respects to her father. [ source : yahoo.com
